Cornell at Maidstone
The History behind Cornell and Maidstone
Cornell made Kent’s County town of Maidstone its home, we opened our first shop in this bustling town over two centuries ago. Maidstone had developed from a market town with its many crafts and industries in to an important Retail and Tourist centre that you see today. Along with the growth and modernisation of this significant town are subtle reminder of its remarkable past.
The imposing Archbishops Palace that stands along the meandering river Medway was given to the Archbishop of Canterbury and was used as a place of respite for travelling Archbishops on their journey from London to Canterbury. The magnificent building that stands today was built in the fourteenth century and is now the Kent Register Office for civil marriages and public records. The blend of old and new gives you a sense of time honoured tradition and values that Maidstone still offers its modern day visitors as they explore the towns captivating shopping streets.
